12_5 Anshelm Schultzberg 1891 Capri 44x74 9000E Stockholms.jpg

Anshelm Schultzberg was a visual artist born in 1862 in the town of Falun. He was educated at the Technical School in Stockholm under Edvard Perséus in 1881, and then at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1882−1886. He was awarded a royal gold medal in 1886, and took study trips as a Fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts to France from 1889−1890, and to Naples from 1891−1892.

The affects of his stay in Paris and of Impressionism can be seen in the painting above. Later, while in Italy, he painted this scene from the beach shore on the island of Capri. The loose brush work shown with quick strokes of paint and bold colors certainly put this work in with the Impressionist. The boat in the foreground appears to be dry docked on supports and covered, while the boat just behind it is uncovered and tethered to the shore with its anchor around a trunk of wood buried in the sand. The water is shown in a rich blue green color have the mountains in the background have a thick impasto of tans, greens and purples.
As an artist he worked with foreign motifs, from France, Corsica, Italy and painted Swedish nature, usually with snow and hoarfrost. Shortly after the turn of the century, he moved to Värmland.
He received medals in Paris in 1889 and in Chicago in 1893, at the World's Fair in Saint Louis in 1904, and as Art Commissioner for the organization of the Swedish Exhibition in America in 1916. He had several times been commissioner of the Swedish Art Department at international exhibitions, including in Rome in 1911 and in San Francisco in 1915. He became a member of the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1900 and was from 1920−1927 chairman of the Swedish Artists' Association.

In 1919 Schultzberg exhibited at the First Annual Exhibition of Contemporary International Art at the Dallas Art Association, alongside works by John Singer Sargent, Alfred Sisley, James McNeill Whistler, Anders Zorn, August Rodin, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Gustave Courbet, George Bellows and Mary Cassatt.
