About
Every Moment is a Memory
Even Ulving was a Norwegian painter born in Ulvingen in Vega in 1863. He changed his name from Kristoffersen to his town's namesake around 1884. He is known for portraits and landscapes, characterized by a realistic perception of motifs, often kept in a color dominated by shades of gray and green.
Ulving was a student of Knud Bergslien in Kristiania from 1883–1884, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Heinz Heim and Karl Fr. Smith from 1885–1886. Later he attended the Académie Julian in Paris under William Bouguereau in 1887. He also made several study trips to Italy and France.
From 1893–1913, he lived on the island of Sømnes in Helgeland where a number of Nordland motifs originated, including from Lofoten fishing areas. He also painted seven altarpieces for churches in Helgeland. During this period he painted Victoria Hamsun at the table piano in 1909 during a visit to Drøbak, a tightly composed and precisely painted picture that is considered one of his best and now in the National Museum.
From 1914 he lived in Åsgårdstrand in Vestfold, and from then on he painted a number of pictures with motifs from the Oslo Fjord, from Vestfold, Telemark, Sørlandet and Hvaler. From tours of Italy in the 1920s he produced a number of pictures with motifs from Italian cities and landscapes.
Ulving is represented in the National Gallery in Oslo as well as works in the permanent collection of Gallery Lofoten in Henningsvær.
