About
Every Moment is a Memory
Johan Eric Ericson was a visual artist born 1849 in Karlshamn in Blekinge. He was the son of a box carver Anders Ericsson and Johanna Sjöholm. Johan Ericson studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1872–1878 and in France from 1878–1884, where he joined the light and mood painters. During the period in France he was also an assistant in Alfred Wahlberg's studio. In 1882 he married the artist Anna Gardell and they exhibited together on multiple occasions.
He was a teacher of freehand drawing at Chalmers Technical University in Gothenburg between 1885–1915 and director of Valand's painting school from 1889–1890. For several years he was a member of the purchasing committee at the Gothenburg Art Museum and on the board of the Gothenburg Art Association. His own collection of hand drawings forms the basis for the collection of drawings at the Gothenburg Art Museum.
Ericson's works have been exhibited at several museums, including the National Museum in Stockholm and the Gothenburg Art Museum. A memorial exhibition of his art was shown in Stockholm in 1927 and in Gothenburg in 1949.
