John Jon-And

John Erik Andersson (John Jon-And) was a visual artist, illustrator, and set designer born in 1889 in Gothenburg. As a young artist he was active as a newspaper cartoonist. In 1912 he studied for periods at the Valand School of Fine Arts, and from 1913–1914 he was a student of the Cubist Henri Le Fauconnier in Paris.
At Valand, John met the artist Agnes Cleve and they married in 1915. Both Jon-And and his wife were the first artists to bring cubism to Sweden. They also were active members in The Artist Club (Konstnärsklubben), an organization dating back to 1856, intended to support the artists' social welfare. The author Sven Stolpe wrote of Jon-And that during the Artists' Club's Thursday gatherings Jon-And often amused the other members by filling the paper canvas in front of his seat with instant caricatures of the group and, "he could manage to capture a profile without ever letting the pen leave the paper."
The Jon-Ands moved to Stockholm and the artist was employed as a cartoonist at The Swedish Daily News (Svenska Dagbladet). During the First World War they became acquainted with Wassily Kandinsky, whose painting influenced them. They moved back to Gothenburg in the early 1920s and there Jon-And created modernist stage decor for Lorensbergsteatern and Karl Gerhard's revues. In 1927, they moved back to Stockholm and Jon-And got a job at the Opera as a stage artist with the title Royal Court Painter. He died unexpectedly in 1941, on his way to the Opera.
In 1941 the book Konstnärer was published posthumously at Gebers Förlag that contained the caricature drawings by the artist of his many friends. In 1944 a memorial exhibition was organized at the National Museum in Stockholm, and the following year was also shown at the Art Gallery in Gothenburg. The artist is represented in the Moderna Museum in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum, and at the Performing Arts Museum. The Nationamuseum in Stockholm has 18 of his illustration works.
