Jurgen von Konow

Carl Jurgen von Konow was a painter, graphic artist and printmaker born in 1915 in Östersund. At the age of 16 he studied at the Higher School of Art and Design in Stockholm which lasted from 1930–1934. He also studied in Paris at Académie Scandinave under Maison Watteau. Konow remained in Paris after the Maison Watteau studio closed and continued his studies at the studio of Marcel Gromaire, before attending Stanley William Hayter's first printmaking studio, Atelier Dix-Sept at 17 Rue Campagne-Première in Paris.

The artist first exhibited at Sweden's Public Art Association exhibition in 1934. In 1937 he returned to Stockholm and held his first solo exhibition at Galleri Gummesons in Stockholm. From 1938–1939 he studied graphics at the Art Academy in Stockholm.
He painted landscapes, street views, and figurative compositions with motifs from the countries he visited, and winter pictures from Stockholm. He also executed drawings for stamps. In 1953 he was an assistant teacher of graphic arts at the Higher Art School and then became a teacher from 1955 onward.

Von Konow was part of the artist group Young Swedish Graphics (Ung svensk grafik) which exhibited in London and Paris in 1956. Between 1954–1957 he exhibited with the group Atelier 17 throughout Europe and the United States. In 1958 he received international recognition when he won one of the grand prizes at the graphic exhibition in Ljubljana.

In 1958 von Konow wrote the book, "About graphics: History and Technique" (Om grafik: Historia och Teknik), an introductory book about graphics that also provides practical advice to the skilled artist.
